Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Responsible Officer (RO)?
A Responsible Officer is a senior licensed medical practitioner, appointed by a Designated Body under the Medical Profession (Responsible Officers) Regulations 2010. The RO ensures that doctors connected to the Designated Body undergo appraisal, that supporting information is monitored, and that revalidation recommendations are made to the GMC. Every Designated Body with a prescribed connection to one or more doctors must have an RO.
What is a Designated Body?
A Designated Body is a UK healthcare organisation listed in the Schedule to the RO Regulations, with statutory responsibility for the revalidation of doctors who have a prescribed connection to it. Examples include NHS trusts, independent healthcare providers, and CQC-registered organisations. Every Designated Body must appoint a Responsible Officer.
Does my organisation need a Responsible Officer?
If your organisation is a Designated Body under the RO Regulations and one or more licensed doctors have a prescribed connection to it, the organisation must appoint a nominated Responsible Officer. MYRO provides an outsourced RO service for organisations that do not wish to appoint one in-house.
What does MYRO's Responsible Officer service include?
MYRO provides a named, trained, GMC-licensed doctor to act as your organisation's RO under the Regulations, coordination of appraisal, clinical governance support, policies and procedures, management of performance concerns, and revalidation recommendations to the GMC — a coordinated system addressing the statutory requirements of a Designated Body.
How much does MYRO's Responsible Officer service cost?
Fees are bespoke and depend on the size of the organisation, the number of connected doctors, and the scope of services required. MYRO provides a written fee proposal following an initial discussion of the organisation's position.
How long does it take to set up an RO service?
Typical timelines are 4–8 weeks from initial enquiry to the first appraisal being scheduled. This includes verification of Designated Body status, contract preparation, NHS England designation if required, appointment letter issuance, and onboarding of connected doctors onto the appraisal management system.
Can MYRO help with a new NHS England designation application?
Yes. MYRO assists organisations through the NHS England designation process, including preparation of Form A (RO nomination) and Form B (designated body application), verification of CQC registration and clinical governance arrangements, and liaison with NHS England on behalf of the organisation.
Does MYRO serve organisations outside England?
MYRO's Responsible Officer service is primarily delivered to organisations in England, where the Designated Body framework applies. Separate arrangements exist in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland under similar underlying principles.
